Default Power steering conversion

I'm thinking of changing over to power steering for my 64 vert using one of the conversion kits advertised.
Has anyone done this ? If so, how hard is it to do?
as always, what do you guys think of the idea?

Mike,
I just finished installing a power steering kit on my 65. I is not that difficult. I just wanted a more driver friendly car.

Did mine about 2 years ago also. Rented a puller for the pittman arm and it was a pretty ez bolt on conversion. I kinda miss the feel of the road but it sure is nice for slow turning and parking. I'me glad I converted.

Mike, I put the jeep box in about 4 years ago and have about 30000 miles on and love it. It has good road feel, and 2.25 turns lock to lock. Now Tom at Corvette steering services is selling the kit for about 675.00 and it is bolt in.

It looks like you have a white on red vert. I am in the process of restoring a white on red 63 vert to go along with my split window. This is a picture of my steering box.

Default Power Steering Oh Yea!

That was last winters project for me and it was fairly streaight forward. Makes the car a lot more user friendly. Make sure you get new parts, as those old slave cylinders are famous for leaking.Good Luck

I did the same install [jeep, from Tom]as Jeff on my 65. Have a serpentine belt system and a late model steering pump. You have to cut off about 2'' of your steering shaft, it's a perfect time to rebuild your steering column. It went in very easy, but be sure to follow his instructions.
Have yet to drive it. as I'm still putting it back togeather. Working on the trim now, won't be long.
Jeff if you read this I was wondering if you changed the steering wheel, and or your opinion on a smaller dia. 15" as opposed to the 16" stock wheel to improve fell and /or handling.

This thread is of great interest to me. I know I should rebuild the steering box (has the typical play in it) but the idea of adding PS is very compelling. I love the feel of the road, but the PS would make all around driving so much better.

Hummm, maybe that's the next project.

OSC, I tried a few combinations like the 80 factory wheel, it fits nice and feels good but it hides the top of the gauges and is a pain on long trips. So I ended using a 73 wheel and had it covered and it has good feel and you can see the gauges fine.

I have said this before I have a about 30000 miles on my jeep box and it is the best mod I have done. It has good road feel and is not over powered.

Another thing that really helps is get the upper a frames with 4 or 5 degrees caster built in and the car almost tracks like a new one. Or slot the holes in the cross shaft of your stock a frame so you can dial in 4 degrees caster.

Here is a pic of the steering wheel.

I added PS earlier this summer. Fairly easy job. I also had to swap out 6 qt (365 HP) oil pan for clearance, also easy.

So where did you buy from:

http://www.corvettesteering.com/index.html
or
http://www.flaming-river.com/index.c...=cat/cat63.htm

Also curious, looks like most kits do not include a pump. Am I correct in that?

The pump is a plain-old everyday GM power steering pump. You can salvage one from a junkyard, off of everything from a BB 427 Vette to a rusted-out Chevy or GMC pickup truck. Any parts store should be able to get you one...cheep.

The magic, though, is in the Control Valve. Not all control valves are the same. I initially had an incorrectly 'sprung' one, but didn't know it...fortunately it developed a big leak and got one from Brian at Bair's Corvettes. Whoa...what a difference in steering feel.

Default Flaming River

Sorry to jump back on this steering conversion thread, BUT....what do you guys think of Flaming River's rack and pinion system vs. say Steeroids or Corvette steering?

I wonder if they are going to expand their Power R&P kit to Corvettes?

tks.

i like the idea of the power Jeep box, the standard C2 power steering system can be kind of 'vague'.... wish the Jeep box would work on a C1.....

the last time I spoke to Flaming River they said that they didnt do a Big block unit yet so I dropped them off of my list. If they have a unit for a BB then I may be interested too.
