Default Shell Rotella Oil to change in 2007

Found this on another site:

Is Shell Rotella® T motor oil going to have less zinc in 2007?

Yes. The API CJ-4 (next generation) Shell ROTELLA® T multigrade motor oil will have a slightly lower level of zinc than the current API API CI-4 PLUS Shell ROTELLA® T. Zinc is typically used as part of the anti-wear system within the oil. However, less zinc in API CJ-4 oils compared with API CI-4 PLUS oils does not mean increased wear. In fact, wear protection is one of the key areas where the API CJ-4 category provides improvements over API CI-4 PLUS. (Other areas include; oxidation stability and soot control). The new API CJ-4 Shell ROTELLA® T multigrade motor oil also meets the requirements of earlier API performance categories such as API CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, as well as others, and can be used in engines specifying any of these performance categories.

Heres a sight that list several oils and their properties.

I just switched over to Shell Rotella 15W 40 after reading many posts regarding the additive package that protects older configured engines. I had been using Castrol GTX 10W 40. After viewing the chart in the article, I see the Zinc levels are identical between the Castrol and the Rotella at .12. Am I really getting any additional protection with the Rotella in light of this? I will defer to the experts on this. Thanks.

That article is over seven years and several specfications old.

I keep telling you guys that brand name is not important. The only thing that counts is API service category, and nearly all oils sold today for spark ignition engines are SM (but a few SLs may remain on the shelves) and there's no way that a current SM will have as much ZDDP as a CI-4 oil due to the phosphorous limitation in the SM specification. There's no way that today's Castrol GTX 10W-40 has as much ZDDP today as it did in 1999 or a current CI-4 - NO WAY! Read and heed the disclaimer in the yellow box at the top of the article!

Even though the CJ-4 spec will have some reduced additive concentrations, it will still be much more suitable to vintage engines than SM oil.

The internet has now been around long enough that some material is dated and no longer applicable, today. In particular, motor oil an fuel technology is moving ahead at a rapid pace. What we buy today is different than what be bought seven years ago, and what we buy in two years will likely be different than today's products.

So watch the dates on internet material, and any article with oil or fuel specifications and/or component analyses that's more than a couple of years old is totally obsolete.

As always, thanks for the info Duke. I didn't catch the date at the top of that article. I just changed the oil in the big block yesterday and used the Rotella 15W40. I feel better. The Rotella by the gallon is very reasonably priced also.
