FYI-The STi went 1:26.800 that weekend to set a class record and the Z...well it went 1.28.70! For those of you that take your Z or any car to Willow you know who fast that is. I have a full race 944 turbo that runs 1.27's so I am certainly impressed with these two cars.

Thanks for posting!
Why, oh why does everybody have to ruin these videos by adding music?
allanlaw, I now see why your brakes have lasted so long, that track doesn't need brakes!
Those STIs can be set up to be very quick as we see here even more so on a tight track. I'm surprised the Z06 can't do better on such a track setup like this.
Allanlaw, any other regulars?

It also looks like at the 3:22 mark in the video the Z06 braked way too much and late messing up the sweeping left almost yielding purposely to the STI. The STI took a tighter line so the the Z06 should've been able to carry more speed.
I guesss the 1.28.70 is fast as I haven't driven there. It always looks like the driver is slow from the camera view even when he's hauling butt!

Mike,
Again, I can't explain what a big deal it means to run mid/high 20's at Willow Springs. It's like being able to say you have a low 9 sec street car. If your running mid/high twenty's at Willow you are a pretty big dog.
That STi is truly impressive...but you put 305's all the way around an awd car that is probably right around 2800-3000lbs that puts 450rwhp down and it can go that fast at Willow.
I am truly impressed if that Z did do a 1:28...I was not there so I cannot verify but to me it is certianly moving well. I also cannot say what is done to the car. I would assume Hoosiers, different shocks, tuning, headers etc.
And yes, this track is not hard on brakes but to run fast you need a giant set of *****! In that video that STi & Z should be running 145ish around turn 8(there are only 9 turns on this track and 8 is a very gradual turn) and over 150 down the front straight.
I to think the Z let up to let the STi pass. But if those lap times that were stated are accurate then the STi is truly the faster ride...but 2 seconds a lap at that level is huge and to me they looked very similar. But who knows maybe this video represented early in the weekend and the STi wasn't running full tilt.

The times noted above are posted on the NASA website, so I have no reason to doubt them. The benchmark I'm using for Willow Springs is a recollection that Johnny O or one of the other members of the Corvette racing team ran 1:30 stock (runflats), and one of the magazine testers who is a really good driver ran 1:31-1:32 stock (runflats). If you put on slicks and goose up the suspension, it should be good for another 3-4 seconds. I think the chatter on the other board leaned toward the Z being modified, so who knows what was really going on, but 1:28 is roughly what really good drivers in Vipers with slicks were running years ago. My personal goal for this year is 1:32 stock except for softer street tires (Nitto 555RII's, 18" all around). I'm pretty close now so maybe by Christmas?
Edit: A post on the other site -
"the ZO6 has penske's with remote reservoirs, headers, a chip and kumho 285 fronts and 315 rears. He said he has put around 10K in the car." The Kumho's must be one of the 700-series race tires.

Shoot for a 131 and you'll hit 132 no problem, it's all placebo!

Allan,
Thanks for your post...those times are very helpful and good luck on your quest! I know you will get there.
As soon as I sell my race car I'm sure I'll be joing you with my Z out on the track.

Another thread from a better Subaru forum (marginally more serious)
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1067048
Also I moved up from a WRX to a C6 not too long ago and I still respect Subarus, they're just not quite as much fun. Both cars are light and performance oriented without a lot of luxury items so they are similar in some respects. And it goes both ways, someone at nasioc mentioned that they traded their STi for a VY C6 and got lots of hate, so I'm keeping my mouth shut there.

I traded an '05 STi (as well as my C5Z) on my C6Z.
That STi was a fantastic car that handled terrifically, and had lots of potential.
Matter of fact, I campaigned the STi in Solo for '05 in completely stock form (not even alignment), and would have faster times than stock C5Zs (on streeties, of course). It's time was only beaten once, and the cars are in different classes.
Sorry, STis are to be reckoned with

1:31.8 - completely stock C6Z w/runflats, Kim Wolfkill, Road & Track road test
1:31.1 - completely stock C5Z w/GY SC, Andy Pilgrim
1:28.86 - T1 C5Z w/race rubber, Scotty B White
