5 Good Reasons To Replace Your Wiring Harness
After a few dead shorts inside the harness it looks like Bubba and Cletis tried to fix them. Most of the burnt wires were hidden by the harness tape......so beware, yours could look like this without you knowing.

Also, realize...how old these harness are. I was driving along many months ago and something shorted on mine. It burned the wires all the way back to the panel. Scared the crap outta me. I thought the car was going to catch on fire. Removed it, had no bubba work or splices. Just OLD AGE was its problem.
Replaced with a LL. Feel much better now.

Excellent Post. Not much is more important than...
...getting good safe wiring in the car. I got my 58 a couple of months ago. Love the car but when I saw old crispy wiring under the dash, I instantly scheduled replacement.
The thought of a well burning 1958 corvette really got me going. I now disconnect the battery when I park it for the night. Simple but safe. Remember two years ago when the Ford truck cruise controls started heating up? Many car fires from that and these happended after the trucks were parked for a few days.

I just did my engine and interior harness, but they didn't have any burn spots on them like this. Mine was just butchered up a little more with a lot of butt connectors on it, and several missing connections.

Yep, new wires, it's a wonderful feeling. I replaced mine after smelling smoke but never found the gun... But if I had to describe the old wiring with one word, I'd call it CRUNCHY. The more I looked for damage the more I convinced myself to just go ahead and replace it all. I used LL and am happy with it so far. I'm still tied up in While I'm At It's, namely frozen headlight pivot *****.

The wiring insulation in my '60 was brittle like a potato chip. Bend the wire and snap, went the insulation. Old age and exposure to 5 different lacquer paint jobs fossilized the insulation. I replaced with LL.
Happy guy.

Factory C1 and early C2 wiring harnesses had no circuit protection (fuses) for a few circuits. Even with a new harness, you could have an electrical fire. Around 1966-7, Chevrolet installed fusible links in the main feed coming off the starter solenoid. This is a very worthwhile modification to make to all previous cars.
Look up "fusible link" in the archives. There's lots of info on this mod.

After looking at mine, I replaced the complete fuse block assembly and soldered all connections instead of relying on the stock crimp on terminals.
