Default C6 VS GT500 in Car & Driver

I just got the mag - if its not a repost, then go get the issue, C&D July 2006.

The C6 wins grabs 1st place

1/4 mile

C6 GT500

12.8 @113 12.9 @ 112

2 mile road course C6 - 1.30.40 vs GT 1.33.30

"Its been two years since we first drove the C6, and we're still impressed"

My friend is a sales guy at Galpin Ford in LA and he says people are going nuts about the new car and willing to pay an isht load of money over MSRP - so forget finding one for 45K anytime soon.

The C6 is an awesome AWESOME car!

UPDATE - I also got the new Road & Track - they managed a 13.1 @112

Another Update - in case your not aware by now - Motor Trend got 12.7 @ 116

The 1/4 mile times surprise me for both of them. And with 500hp, that is one contest I thought the Mustang might have us (yes, I know it wieghs more....). But honestly, that is not any faster than the previous Cobra.

Both cars seem to have run slow, but it is a side by side , same venue test. Here's some more numbers;

C6 GT

4.3 vs 4.5 0-60
9.9 vs 10.3 0-100
26.8 vs 30.3 0-150

Rolling start 5-60

5.0 for the C6 vs 5.2

Top speed 186 C6 - vs 155 (limited by the ECU) for the GT

J-
I remember when you got your first C6 to run 12.4's and I know your car didn't have the torque management (TM) issues as some other members, but I've heard that Ford is also messing around with TM to protect parts. The new Z06es are gaining around 30 rwhp (according to Andy Green from A&A Corvettes) with just tuning - I bet the new GT will be a different animal with tuning, CAI and a smaller pulley.

Hope your doing well, J!!

Can you scan the article? This puts to rest those who doubted the numbers from another post. I can see where the GT500 wouldn't beat the C6 in the corners but it still looks like it's a drivers race, at least in the 1/4 mile. Obviously a C6 in the right conditions can run in the low 12's so I expect the GT500 to be within that range as well.

I just ordered the digital C&D and have the article. I've tried saving it, copying it, etc but to no avail. It's a good read

I think the white with blue stripes on the GT500 looks great. I wouldn't mind having one next to the C6. The article also mentioned that they ran a 12.6@114 in another C6 Z51 but felt this Vette with only 700 miles was not broken in it.

I agree with all of your comments. Somehow, I doubt if there will be many GT500's running around stock for long. I know the Supercharged Cobras were very easy to get to 480rwph with just exhaust, pulleys and tuning.

Thanks for the personal note

In the current Hot Rod magazine, Ford ALREADY has part #s for performance upgrades, including CALIBRATION.

I'm in the process of switching over from the Lotus world to a new 2007 Vette that I've got on order. What still amazes me is how most manufactures seem to think that all they need to do is throw more horsepower in a car to make it go faster. Colin Chapman founder of Lotus learned early on that power-to-weight ratio was the secret, not sheer horsepower. My little 190hp Lotus Elise could do 0-60 in 4.6 seconds but it only weighted 1900 lbs. while still getting almost 30 mpg. Chevy seems to have finally realized the importance of power-to-weight. Look at what Chevy did with the Z06. They added more horsepower but they also made it lighter. Now that new GT500 could kick some serious butt if it weren't so darn heavy. I think Ford really blew a great opportunity with the GT500. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a nice car but it could of been so much better. Why more manufactures refuse to bring the weight down on modern cars just baffles me.

Finally? The C5 Z06 and C5 are both light cars, relatively speaking. I believe the C5Z06 isl lighter than the current Z06 as well. Before that, the C4's weren't exactly heavy weights. I think GM has understood this for quite some time.
