Default Air Charger Installed ...interesting Results

Just had the Air Charger installed yesterday by LAPD in Chatsworth, CA. (they previously installed Kooks 1 7/8 inch long tube headers and did dyno tuning). LAPD is the first official distributor of the Air Charger in the LA area. Prior to te installation, my Z dynoed at 494.62 RWHP and 458.14 RWTorque. (with headers and tuning). With the Air Charger, the numbers are 498.31RWHP and 467.05 RWTorque. I was present for the dyno tuning after the Air Charger was installed, and the tuner did 42 runs to finally get the optimum REAL numbers. I learned alot about tuning by being present. It's facinating! I was surprised that the HP increase was low, but the torque increase was a bit higher than expected. It was explained to me that an aftermarket airbox will get a bit less of an increase in numbers on a car that has headers as opposed to a car without. And different cars will have slightly different numbers since these motors are hand built. Also, advertised increases with some companies must be taken with a grain of salt. But I am quite happy with all of this because I can feel a difference in power in real world driving at higher speeds. And I know that Doug (the tuner at LAPD) is as good as anyone out there, and no one could have gotten higher numbers on my car. So yes, I do recommend the Air Charger, but don't expect miracles. It's just a bolt on airbox...not a cam or blower!

Good results. You need to eek out another 2 RWHP for that big 500! Add an electric water pump.

i agree totally.

i went from 460 to 489 with the aircharger and tune. While gaining another 30rwhp with the headers would be nice I wouldn't expect anymore than a 15-20hp gain.

42 pulls.... my ***.

Remember the air charger works by obtaining colder air outside the engine compartment... it'll work better when you're actually moving.

Brian, what... you mean you don't do 42 runs on your car to dial it in? That would just about empty the gas tank

It sounds like you are happy with the results Mr. Ronnie CZ06. Dorn it, just 1.7rwhp away from 500 on the dyno! Well, drive it more and then check back. Often like on the old LS1's motors, a little more power can be had after some learning miles. And as you mentioned, on the road you will be making every bit of 500rwhp or more since air will be ramming in. Another thing to consider is L.A where you currently reside; the highest premium gasoline is 91 octane! A couple of points may help you achieve that 500 mark...just my guess.

And yes I will agree with you, there is a lot of BS floating around this forum about dyno numbers and track performances. I like having my car dyno back to back to back ensuring good solid results. The same goes for the track; I like to see myself repeat a great run at least twice times before calling it quits.... if track allows me!

Congrats and keep us updated.

Of course you are correct...that is why a good tuner has a giant fan in front of the car that can simulate air speeds at different fan speeds.
But I do not understand the comment about your ***.

I brought the car in with about 7/8 of a tank of gas, and left with about 5/8 of a tank. The runs used 1/4 tank.

You made some very good points, all of which I agree with. It would have been nice to hit 500RHP, but what the hell...the real fun is in the driving...not the numbers!

Hi RonnieC6Z,

Are you running 93 octane or 91? That can mean a difference to you of about 2/91 * 498.3 = approx 11 hp!

oops I missed the post by myhardtop right above me. There has to be 100 octane unleaded in the ground somewhere around you then you can blend your 91 and 100 to obtain 93+

Wow, is that right!

Wait Mr. Junky, you live in LA and you pulled something like 508rwhp with similar mods and the air-charger with a EW pump...right?

If so, then Ronnie get some 93 octane buddy, this is a 11.1 motor !

Good thinking on your part...there is a station 5 minutes away that has 100 octane.

Unfortunately, your timing has to be adjusted again to accommodate the 93, but it looks like you should get at least 11 more rwhp! I've kept my blend above 93.2 for about 1500 miles now and it makes a noticeable difference, not a big difference but if you tweak your engine with 6 such improvements----------

I actually live "near LA" --- in Northern California about a 5.75 hr ride on Hwy 5

I agree...I have the exhaust switch (which is almost always open) and LAPD did my Kooks headers. The car really sounds like a big block 427. Al, the GM at LAPD, built his own exhaust system for his 01 Z, (very modified motor) and I think my Z sound just as good, and Al's sounds great!

Did you run with the exhaust switch closed on any of them?
If so what did it do for performance or did it hurt it?

All runs were with the switch open, for I always drive with the switch open except in 6th on the freeway. We did try 2 runs with the same settings (switch open & closed), and there is a bit more power with the switch open.

Baffle will be OPEN (with or w/o a switch) above 3500 rpm, so it shouldn't matter on a dyno pull.
