Altered my Magnaflows
OK, The loudness of my SS Magnaflows was becoming just too much and I did not enjoy driving the car,,, so,,,,
Saturday, I pulled out a bag of Steel Wool and cut the length of the package in half.
I then shoved 1/2 of the length into the muffler tube closest to the center of the car. I can still reach it to pull it out if I want, in case I go to the track etc. I packed it in tight with a long 1" diameter wooden dowel so it wont blow out under WOT.
Anyway, it sounds perfect to me now, the car still noticeably has a 406 CI performance sound and my head doesnt hurt after long rides of listening to the stereo over top of the exhaust.
It is not what I really wanted to do,, but I am glad I did it, and it is reversible!

Interesting!
This is very interesting. I have been complaining alot lately about my first generation B&B. I may have to try this. Steel wool is flameable, right??? I would like to know what is available to muffle the muffler?

I've always found it in basic hardware stores. As far as I know it is still used in sanding trim by some people. Another idea, although I have no idea if it will be here, is Super Walmart, around where they keep the cleaning supplies, or over in the paint section, or where they keep the sandpaper if thats not in the paint section. Seems like I remember seeing it in walmart.

If it were me, I'd make an aluminum plug that just slips into the exit and is held in place by one or two machine screws. Be easy to put in and take out, and would last forever.

the easiest way is to cover one exhaust pipe with a plumbers jim cap.....it's rubber, uses a screwed clamp and is easy to remove when you want to make noise......but everyone asks what the heck is that.

I have considered taking a piece of aluminum that is round & close to the ID of the muffler tube,
and inserting a disc that has a tapered set set screw in it so you could expand the disc inside the ID of the hole.
I wold have to cut a slit into the disc so the tapered set screw would allow the disc to expand and wedge itself into the hole.
I also considered cutting a piece of expanded metal and trying to attach it to the opening,
but really, this Steel Wool is working so well, I just have not taken the time to do any more with this, but I will in a few weeks.

I want to do something simple so it would be reproduce-able and easily removed.
The problem mainly with the Magnaflows, is that the muffler tips are rolled over making the ID of the Muffler tips small at the opening and larger behind the opening.
So I figure that fitting a piece into the muffler exit tube will be the easiest solution. If I can figure this out, I will make a couple of sets so maybe you could try a set too for a second opinion.

I changed gears to a higher number and the resonance/noise changed as the rpms were higher.
Try drving in a lower gear and see if the noise is lower, not that droning noise when you lug around.

Hey Brad, I just looked at it again quickly in the garage and it looks like there is a short "turn down" for @ 1" long in the muffler tip, before the tip joins to the muffler body.
So effectively, we can put plug or obstruction in this area without having to put it inside the perforated muffler tube. THis is good because it is a larger ID than the muffler tube
I will check into this some this weekend! Stay tuned!
