How not to get burned with sidepipes?
My wife and I both want to get the Hooker sidepipes for our 69, but lately she says she wants covers to avoid getting burned. Obviously, I have to provide some way to protect our legs, but I haven't seen a cover I like. What are your experiences with sidepipes? Anybody have pics of their covers or other ideas to protect calves?
Thanks
Ken

The best way not to get burned is by not touching the pipes while they are hot...LOL....Ecklers has some pretty cool covers at a reasonable price(NOT GREAT)) but they do work

I was thinking of some sort of insulated blanket I could flip over the pipes when we get in or out. Any other ideas or suggestions. I love the look of the bare sidepipes, but I can't put them on if my wife is goint to constantly get burned.

Ken trust me .... you'll only burn yourself once. It hurts so damn bad you'll never do it again. I know from personal experience. I only nicked my ankle one time, and I knew from that point forward to step out away from the car when exiting. My girlfriend just got her first burn early in the summer. She's been in and out of the car a million times before too. Know that they are hot, and you wont get it. (and warn ALL of your passangers)

Mike69,
Thanks for the response, I figured it wouldn't happen too many times, but the idea of a big scar like some people have showed didn't appeal to the wife. I think a good scar gives a guy character, but not a nice lady with shapely legs.
Thanks to the other forum members, I have contacted Jim about his baffles and heatshields. Jim has pics up on his website of the heatshields.
Thanks
Ken
By the way, Victoria's Secret doesn't carry Nomex.

I know how you feel! I had a 74 coupe with black Hookers and more than a few gals burned their calves on those things. :cry. Second degree burns are NOT :mad conducive to having a romantic evening :(
Finally I went with factory '69 pipes with fiberglass covers from Ecklers and painted them to match the car. I thought the factory pipes sounded better too. No more burns after that and it was happy days again

I had them on mine (Hookers), and agree, once you fry your leg, you remember to take it out a little further next time. No offense to the maker, but those shields, although they may take care of the problem, just plain look <fill in the blank> :cry to me.

70PURPLES7. I'M NOT SURE THAT WAS DIRECTED AT MY BURNSHIELDS OR NOT. THEY ARE PICTURES OF THE PROTOTYPE SET I'VE BEEN WORKING WITH TO SEE HOW HOT OR COOL THEY STAY. ONCE THAT IS ESTABLISHED AND A DIFFERENT SIZE AND A LITTLE POLISHING( THEY SAY IT LOOKS JUST LIKE CHROME) ,THEY SHOULD BE ATTRACTIVE AND FUNCTIONAL. BUT TO EACH HIS OWN!!! JCL

I have some killer covers on my sidepipes
they're like the ones you see on trucks.
I bought the car with them on but I love them !
no clue who makes them, sorry :(

Jim,
My apologies, I thought the pictures on the website were of the finished product. If that not be the case, and what your planning on doing will blend with the hooker pipes, it should look nice.

KEITH. ACCEPTED!! THE ONLY KICK IN THE foot IS GETTING THE STAINLESS POLISHED. TO DO IT RIGHT AND TO GET NO SWIRLS IS ABOUT $140.00 JUST TO POLISH IT!!!! THINK I'M GOING TO LEAVE THAT AS AN "OPTION". IF NOT THEY CAN FIND THERE OWN BUFFER! THANKS, JIM PERFORATED STAINLESS AND ALUMINUM ALSO "WILL" BE AVAILABLE!! :chevy

I love the pipes, but need to find some Nomex socks!

I dont actually have my sidepipes yet, but am thinking of heat shields.
I like my legs w/o burns, and I'm certain if my GF burned her leg on one she would never ride in my car again. I hate driving in her NEON!
I was thinking of wrapping the pipe in the heat tape for headers (painted black on the black pipes) and a chrome shield over the top. The chrome grill inserts you can buy from Jegs with the flames on them.
Will IMHO either look really cool or really stupid, but only about $40 to find out. Plus if I don't think it will work said GF want the flames for the grill of the POS Neon.

Mine do get a little warm, but not hot enough to cause a burn.
