Default Does the A6 launch in first gear or second gear ,WHAT UP WITH THAT?

Do I have to use the paddles to start off in in first gearr or can I just use the D or S mode for first gear . STARTING IN SECOND DOES NOT SOUND TO EXCITIG. DOES THE A4 3:15 launch better than the A6 in NON PADDLE MODE? I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO FEEL OBLIGATED TO THE PADDLES OR I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN A M6! PLEASE EXPLAIN!

Default 1st gear

My A6 seems to sometimes start out in first sometimes in second in the sport mode. Can't seem to figure out why or when? Someone suggested shifting with the paddles to first then shift between D and S so the car will start in first and shift itself. Shouldn't be this way.

When I am using the paddle shift and I come to a stop the car will remain in "2" unless I shift down to 1st. No problem for me.

Maybe someone could post what it says in the owner's manual about this. I am thinking about purchasing an A6. I am curious as to how it is set up. If you can only start in first if you are in paddle mode I think I would rather get an A4. Save some money on an 05.

How about in the automatic D and S mode with no paddles am I in 1st or 2nd at a launch from a stop light?

While the Manual Paddle Shift gear selection system is active, the transmission will automatically downshift through the gears as the vehicle slows. The transmission will select second gear as the vehicle stops. From a stop, the vehicle will start from and hold second (2) gear unless the driver manually paddle shifts into a different gear or selects DRIVE (D). The driver can select first (1) gear for maximum acceleration from a stop.

So let me get this right say I never used the paddle mode and only use D or S mode WILL THE A6 ACT THE SAME AS THE A4 AND START IN FIRST GEAR AT A STOP SIGN OR TRAFFIC LIGHT?

I have a manual, but here's what I would guess would happen. I'd guess the car would start in 2nd in normal driving conditions, but launch in 1st if you were flooring it or coming close. That would make sense to me, but I'm just guessing.

I think the A6 always starts in second gear unless you override it through the paddles. It doesn't bother me.

I'm still confused.

If you start the car then put it in "D" are you in 1st or 2nd?

Based on feel, I think "D" and "S" mode launches the car in 2nd gear.

Is it a good feel or bad feel to your liking?

This automatic will start off in second, unless the driver actively chooses first. End of story.
