You can cut a 3/8 square hole in the top center circut board ends of the relay's, which are located on the module circut board. The case is thin plastic and will cut easily with an exacto knife. This will expose the contacts for the solenoids.
Stick emery cloth inbetween the contacts, press the contact points closed with something small like a toothpick and pull the emery cloth out. A few times of this and the contacts will be clean. Tape the hole over and put everything back together. Mine's been working fine since the cleaning of the contact points.

Melting Slicks
I have seen a bunch of posts on this issue, my 02 is doing the same thing, these modules must be very failure prone. a couple of the other posts suggested a weak battery. the drill out tip sounds like one to try
BUT I HATE REMOVING DOOR PANELS, I have never pulled 1 without busting a couple of clips. and yes i use the little flat tool

A little additional information on the relay's would be helpful. There is one relay to pull the solenoid down to lock the door. There is a second relay that reverses the polarity and pulls the solenoid up to unlock the door. The solenoid pulls quite a bit of current and creates a significant electrical arc across the contact points each time the relay is activated. This large arc can leave a carbon deposit on the contacts that will sometimes insulate the contacts from each other, resulting in a locking or unlocking action that will no longer work. A few strokes of the emry cloth, on both contacts, will usually clean the deposits away and every thing will work normally.

Great pictures!
Is there any way to modify the circuit to prevent this arcing? My D/S module has advanced from unlock to both unlock and lock being intermittent .

Here's the fix
I have had several of these door control modules go "bad" on my '01 and '02. After reading others posts regarding failure, I decided to tear one apart to see for myself what goes wrong. Here's a picture of the passenger side relay (ripped open) for the door lock that stopped working - just as suspected - BURNT CONTACTS!!!
Here's a direct 12 volt - 5 pin replacement relay with the exact same external dimensions. A little solder wick and a soldering iron and they come out very easily. Should take less than an hour to do, including removing the door panel.
Look at the invoice from Digi-Key for the part number - only $1.30 each (plus shipping of course).

I tore one open several months ago and filed the contacts, but unfortuantely that fix didn't last long. After finding the correct sized part, it was a no brainer to just replace it

Excellent Thread!!!
In the pics, the lock-relay looks different in size/shape from the unlock relay. Are these same spec relays? I can not make out the part marking on the unlock relay. I would like to replace both, so I am looking for a make and part number for the unlocking relay or a good sub.
Also, any details on replacing (make & part number, a sub is welcome too ) the relays that control the windows (up / down ). If we can get these three items, It would make this thread a definite sticky!!!
