Default C5 Crash Test

A little while back someone was asking about the safety of the C5. While at the NCM last week I shot this video of the C5 Crash test display. The quality is so-so but you can sure get a look at the survivability of this car. This test is a 35 mph head on collision. The passenger compartment remains relatively unscathed.

Here's a photo of the crashed car that is on display in the museum.

I saw that, makes you feel a little safer. Did you go on the plant tour as well?

We didn't take the tour this time. We've been on three. This trip we tried to do some different things, we went up to Heaven Hill Distillery with a group of 28 Corvettes on one day and up to Mammoth Cave alone on another.

There have been many stories about C5s being involved in a crash and the occupants coming out with little or no injuries. I know on my insurance the car gets a good rating.

My insurance is low because of that crash test and I'm getting old!

Thanks for sharing those pics, Paul. When I was at the museum last October (Geez....that's almost a year ago!?!?) When I saw that display I was pretty impressed with the structural rigidity of the C5 and it sure made me feel like I was in a pretty safe car.

Randy,

October...you've got to get there more often than that. The video is pretty amazing when you focus in on the cockpit and see how it holds up. These cars have always been fun, now I sure feel better about the safety as well.

Looks like the car is solid from the front.

I really do marvel at the results. While the car looks pretty banged up, the crumple zones appear to work well. The car being crashed is a '97 and I have to believe that they've probably improved on those results a bit as well over time.

Anyone know what has caused so many fires in the recent vette crashes? That scares me almost as much as the crash itself.

Do you have any more details. I have to say that that is news to me.

There were 3-4 posts not too long back where several corvettes crashed and their fuel tanks exploded. Can't recall the exact postings, but i'm sure someone can
