Default Flat tire repair.

How well does the tire sealant/electric inflator work for the Z? I'm thinking of taking a long trip in my 01. Is there a company that makes a "donut" spare...just in case?? I'll make sure my AAA membership is current.... Thanks!

If its a 01 check the expiration date on your sealant....I just got a flat. I went to use the sealant and it was expired. It was too THICK to get into the tire. I just used the tire inflator and drove slowly to the nearest shop.

Default Tire repair

I don't know of any donuts that could be used both in front or back
I know you are not supposed to do this but I used the regular fix a flat once and it got me safely 5 miles to a repair station.

Spare tire in a can or Slime is just as good as the GM sealant. The tire inflator pump is no different than any small electric air pump. A vulcanzing tire plug kit is much better used with a small jack, in case you have to take the tire off the car to get to the hole.

Since your from and rear wheels are different sizes a donut would be of little use.

Get AAA and a cell phone and don't worry.

I have been consistenly disappointed with most sealants in actual use. They usually don't work very well, if at all. I recently read about some brand I hadn't heard of, that sounds like it works pretty good, according to some tests, but there is a better way.

Tire plugs are real nifty if it's a small enough hole, & in the tread area. I have never had a problem with any plug I have personally installed(about 1/2 a dozen to date?). Keeping some Slime stuff on hand just in case a plug can't be used is a good backup, & if between those two fixes you are still flat, call for help.

BTW, the inflator works pretty well, but be sure your engine is running, otherwise the inflator is turning too slow, & it will take forever. Don't ask how I know this .

The GTO spare is a good idea but costs to much and takes up storage room.

The GTO spare idea came up a while back in another thread. I asked and no one ever came forward stating they had actually driven a vette with a GTO spare on it. The bolt pattern is close enough but if you look in that picture the car is still off the ground. The GTO spare is 17", I believe, so would be mismatched to the other tire on the back. I have been told that such a mismatch would damage the Limited Slip Differential if you drove any distance.

I bought my GTO spare for $75. The wheels lists for over $400+. It is aluminum. It fits front and rear and is a 17". Frderick, that sells the mercedes jack suggested a Jag spare with a spacer. No spacer here with the GTO. If it supports a GTO wouldn't it support a vette.

I just want to drive to the next exit, not take a 500 mile trip with it.

Maybe, maybe not.... The issue isn't the wheel diameter being 17"; the critical # is the circumference or rolling diameter of the GTO spare versus the tire you have on the rear of the car. I agree if they're too disparate you could screw up your limited slip diff. As to someone's comment about the fronts and rears being different sizes, apart (maybe) from the ABS or active handling being affected, having a smaller or larger tire (compared to the stock tire) shouldn't matter, as the fronts are simply free rolling....

Okay somehow you got a good deal but, it still takes up precious cargo space.

I would certainly be willing to get a GTO spare and put it in the car any time I took a long trip; I hate the thought of relying on the goop to fix a flat. I just would hate the cost of a rear end rebuild even more.
When I get a chance, I am going to pull out my GTO's spare and and measure it's total circumference as well as that of the front and rear Z06 tires, unless someone already has that info available.

Let's say your flat is one the rears, could the 2 fronts be put on the rears? Then put the gto spare on the front. One argument is what to do with the flat tire? What if some guber pulls up behind you and decides to rob you and rape the little lady? What if the traction control is shut off? We need a engineer to answer?

I keep this kit from JC Whitney, it will fit inside a shaving kit bag. Take some rubber gloves out of your first aid kit to use with this one.

But then you would have the same problem as if you used the GTO tire on the rear. The C5 front tires are not the same size as the rears.
