Default Best speedo and tach cable lube?

For my 67. I remember JohnZ recommending a lube from one of the major vendors, but can't find it by Searching.

Delco used to have a special speedo cable grease, but I don't think they offer it anymore. I use Lock-Eze, which is spherical graphite in a petroleum distillate emulsion. There are also commercial "cable lubricants" on the market that appear to be the same.

I use it for speedo and tach cables, clutch cables, and motorcycle control cables.

It's called "Kable-Ease", and Corvette Central sells it; you'll probably find a similar graphite-based cable lubricant at a good auto parts store. Clean the old lube off the cable, apply the new lube, wipe off the excess, and re-install the flex shaft (after cleaning out the inside of the old housing).

Thanks to both you guys. Sounds as if you both are talking about the same basic product.

Louie:

I'll have to steal a pinch of your new lube My new speedo cable seems a little sticky.

If you'r cheap like me, put a 1/4" of engine oil in a coffee can. Feed the speedo core into the can as you pull it out. Let it soak a bit and feed it back in.

Cris,
A "pinch" for FREE? That lube stuff's expensive! Besides, my speedo and tach are so sticky that I may use the whole container. Besides #2, yours is a racecar, so the coffee can trick L36 is describing should be "good enough."

BTW I just got my car back from Dave at Northstar. The new alignment does wonders, and he adjusted and improved the steering box as well; he really does know how to set up Vettes! Thanks for recommending him. He is the guy to go to when I'm ready to buy an autocross/track C5.

NAPA carries a NAPA brand chain and cable lube in a spray can. It is an excellent product and easy to use. I have used it on my tach and speedo cables on the Corvette as well as motorcycle control cables. Speedo and tach are totally silent and steady as a rock.

I just did this. I would rather pull the motor then lay on my back under that dash at 6'4" tall.

I thought I would just buy new cables if I was going to go to all this trouble. The NEW tack cable jumped all over the place. The cable was plastic which turned me off as well.

I pulled the old tach cable back out of the parts box, hosed it out with cleaner and compressed air, lubed it and re-installed it, works great now.

My new spedo cable was dead on, worked great. Just yesterday my speedo needle stoped moving all together.
