67-68 (and perhaps earlier) should not be included in that article... They use a different cancelling cam that is not fixed to the wheel hub. Also, the switches are apparently no longer available.

I was so disgusted I bought a later year model column and will be modifying it so as to keep my key on the dash. I talked to a guy who has the rights to the production who then offered to put me on a list in case he decides to do a run of them in the future.Gee, thanks buddy! Surely one of you wizards out there can repro this simple plastic POS. but then again the guy who wanted to put me on his list would probably want to sue!!

Am I missing something here? It looks to me from the link in your signature that you have a 1978 or later Vette. This means that your turn signal switch is more modern and does not have those pesky plastic fingers that are prone to break after 37 years of use on the pre-1969 columns. The later turn signal switches had small round springs that actually did the cancelling. This picture on the Zip websight shows a turn signal switch with those small springs.

If you are lucky, one of the springs may be dislodged and sitting inside your steering column. You will need to remove your steering wheel and hub, as well as the locking plate to get at the switch.

Otherwise, you should be able to purchase a complete new switch or if you click on the Zip link and go for the turn signal switch components, you will find the springs.


You can go to www.corvettefaq.com and look in the steering section. Look in the T&T area or the Std (non-adjustable) steering column area for the Disassembly & Repair Paper #1 and the Disassembly & Repair Pic #1 for complete instructions on getting to the switch. If you need to remove the complete switch to replace or repair it, you will need D&R Paper #2 and D&R Pic #2 as well.

I've got a '79 and have had the turn cancelling prob since I got it.It works occasionally,but doesnt 98% of the time.I'm hoping its just the $10 cam listed on ZIP that I need.

Jim, I'm living with a '68 with a non-functional signal cancelling feature. Any advice on how I should go about acquiring a new plastic bit?

pef427, how exactly are you planning to retrofit the later year column? I've been pining for a tilt-tele for my '68 since I got it, but was told by Jim and others that it can't be reasonably be done. On the otehr hand, GrandsportC3 claims to have a mongrel tilt/tele patched together from several later year columns installed and functioning in his '68, but didn't do the job himself and couldn't provide details about how it was done. He says it appears "normal" and functions fine.

Shee-Mar has a substitute, but not the actual switch. What they suggested is for a 67-68 Bonneville/Firebird w/cornering lights. Shee-Mar number SM-229. They said it has an extra (seperate from the semi-circular plug we've got) plug for aux. cornering lights which we would have to disregard. ~$125 shipped. Same day shipping. They have about 25 left. 24 now that I ordered one.

Hey, thought I would add that the guys at Shee-Mar said there are several (3 or 4) switchs which physically fit and function, but are wired differently. Not sure is this one (the 68 Firebird w/o cornering lights) is wired correctly, but it only takes a second to remove the contact pins from the socket and rewire it to match our needs...

I may order one and check it out.

Check that...I'll just stop by my local parts stores (Advance, Napa, and 'Zone) and see what they got...

Bah, wild goose chase. Advance doesn't even list a price in the stores. The web is outdated, apparently. The counter-jocky called Advance Auto corporate while I was standing there. They said it was "Vendor Direct" and couldn't supply it or even give a price. They said I would have to contact the vendor. I said, "OK...so, who's the vendor?" They say, "ACDelco".

Well, AC-D says it's discontinued and the repops are indefinitely unavailable (translation: "bubba's repops" only builds them in lots of 100 during leap years...and there's a waiting list for the 100...). Eventually there will be a supply of these available again, but I'm not willing to wait. I'll ante up for the Shee-Mar substitution and pass my SHP safety checks...

I don't know why you guys fool about. The Shee-Mar comes with the correct wiring harness and connectors, etc. Just pops in (after you pull most of the steering column out of course). But you don't have to cut and splice wiring.

Shee-Mar doesn't have them anymore, Paul. They are the ones who suggested the substitute from the Bonneville.

Roy, I don't think you're hijacking a thread if we are all sharing the same pain. I spent hours and weeks looking and talking thinking surely I could find this thing. I tried from every source...nada.
I had the opportunity at Cf Cruise In to crawl under the dash of GrangsportC3 and found it to look pretty simple. I intend to start next week.Since I have a petite bride a tilt/tele will make her happy.
