Default 2001 w/minor OIL CONSUMPTION, Quick Fix Rumor.....

Hi Guys,

So I was talking to one of my part time guys who is a GM Tech and he was talking to the "Corvette Specialist" at his dealer about my car (S/C on and all). Now I have a slight oil consumption issue but not worth the re-ring headache. Anyway, this guy was saying since the car was packed with Mobile 1 from the plant, that the rings never seated propperly. His sudgestion for a mnior oil consumption problem was to run a few oil changes of regular oil to get the rings to seat in better. I believe that part of my problem was from my driving style on decel and making the rings flutter which I have changed my driving style since. What are your thoughts on this or is this guy talking out of his a$$.

TIA
Brian

There's some forum members (JoeCoool I think) that tried it and claim success. I would also try the PCV change and oil valley seal first.

i have a slightly modded 01, and i'm very happy with it,drive it everywhere, very reliable and mpg is 17-25 and i use a qt of oil every 1600-2000mi depending how hard i drive it
its great,
check out all the TSB's on the 01-and there are plenty..i did the valley cover seal and breather change (under warranty ) and it gave me the improvement in oil consumption, i'm sure some s/c guys can chime in , but i think consumption would be a common issue on many s/c engines. ya wanna go faster-oil and gas will always be a trade off IMO
a pic of mine

Another person who thinks he is the post police.

What about new people who may want info on it?

Don't like the thread topic, don't respond.

Good Lord, the guy has been a forum member since 10/04.... he just wanted some information.... I don't understand getting all high and mighty.... is his question not what this forum SHOULD be used for???

Yes, he could do a search and probably find some info, but do we really need to act like this??? Wouldn't it be a little more civil to simply pass on the post??

Here's my $0.02... I went through all this crap w/ my '01 in the begining of 2004. I bought her in 2003 knowing that there was a potential for oil consumption, but I had found the car of my dreams.

After I got it and started driving it hard (auto-x and HPDE's) the car started to use oil to the tune of 1 quart every 1500 miles. This was unacceptable to me and the *** end stayed oily and spotted. I tried all the "tricks" and band-aids, but finally found a great corvette specialist and had the re-ring done. Since that (over a year ago now) the car uses no oil inbetween changes w/ 4-5 HPDE's a year and lots of hard driving.

Some say it's the oil blah blah... so why then do the '02 and up cars work just fine? They come w/ the syn from the factory... it's the ring package. It's doesn't do it's job and the driving style argument is BS.

I'm sure the boost you're throwing on top of it doesn't help either. FWIW I'd change the PCV valley cover out (under the intake manifold) b/c that can have a bad seal and was 1/2 of my consumption problem, then why not try running a little thicker oil and see how that does. Lastly try to forget about it and just enjoy the car.

I run 0w40 all the time b/c It's a bit thicker when hot for track use but is still 0w for those cold morning starts. It's mobil-1's euro-blend allthougth I don't think it's marketed as that anymore, comes w/ a black cap. It's was held to higher formulation standards before mobil came out w/ all these new fancy bottles.

Cya,
Brian

I was thinking the same about the dino oil. I just bought my 01 vette in april so i really don't know it consumes oil or not only put 300 miles on it so far. I have a Injected alcohol drag car and with synthetic after two hard qtr mile passes it will fill the breather can with oil. It has a Moroso vacuum pump on it to take the crankcase down into a negative when running. It sucks out of the valve cover in the front and blows into a tank. I went back to dino oil 20/50 Valvoline and it settled down. I talked with my machinist and he said he had a couple problems with a turbo motor that would blow the synthetic into the can and went to run dino oil, same thing happened , it quit with the conventional oil. I know we are talking apples and oranges here with 1000 hp engines compared to a stock engine but it seems synthetic gets past the rings easier than regular oil. Were these the first engines that GM used Mobil 1 in from the start? What exactly is the ring differance between the original piston ring and the replacement?

It's actually a new ring pacakge... the scraper ring is a more agressive napier (sp?) design to better scrape oil from the bore and the oil control ring is upgraded from a 9 lb tension ring to a 12 lb ring, this is all standard on the '02+ Z06.

The success was short lived. I ended up getting the engine re-ringed.
