some of my car pc pics for you to check out
some of you may have read my write up on how to modify your dash for a double din h/u. well I had to modify my dash because of the touchscreen lcd panel i am using as the center of my car pc project.
basically the car pc is a full blown pc that runs off of a dc power supply. the monitor is a touchscreen so there is no need for a mouse and as far as a keyboard most of the software i use has an 'on screen keyboard' (osk) that turns my monitor into a keyboard. for the rare times when i need to type something and i don't have an osk i have an ultra mini usb keyboard not much larger then a credit card.
I am using windows xp as the current os with a program called 'centrafuse' that is the front end to all the functions i would want for the car. The program is still in it's beta phase, currently i have the ability to listen to cd's, mp3's,xm radio, it has gps, could watch movies and when my phone is attatched it can access the web (for those times when you forgot an address and have to check an email). when the full version is released there will also be obd-II engine diagnostics.
The front end is fully skinnable, which means that i can redesign it to look any way i want. (look out cross flags)
The dc-dc power supply allows me to start the computer when i put the key to 'acc' and when i pull the key from the ignition it sends a signal to the motherboard to shut down safetly.
I have an 80gb harddrive to store my whole music collections (luckily i already ripped all my cd's to mp3 format when i got an ipod, so it was a simple task of just copying all the files from my laptop to my car)
Here are some photos of the touchscreen and modified dash:
here is the front end while in gps mode, I hacked up a removable faceplate from a pioneer dvd head unit and integrated the buttons into my computer. it definately isn't needed but i thought it would add to the oem look:
this device is a cross over, to send the correct signals to the door speakers as well as the sub (no rear speakers for me ) It also has a few nifty features that i wont bore you with but it makes the music sound great.
if you look close you'll see 2 xtant amps, if you look under the covers one of them is actually my car pc
the thing in the middle is a fan, the grill is a bit cheesy but i really like it:
cool photo to show the fan lit up:
At night when all lit up:
hopefully, tomorrow i should have the screen and interface buttons installed and I'll post them when done.
what the future holds in store? well obd-II will be installed when the feature is ready in the front end software and I'm toying with the idea of integrating song info as well as navigation info into my HUD.
comments suggestions?
