Don't let this happen to you
This is NOT intended to bash a well known product. This is simply something I have observed a number of times with one of the more popular cold air induction sytems. I'm just looking out for other's interests. I hope you'll take it that way.
There have been other discussions about this filter so I'm sure you'll know which one it is. I'm not naming names.
The filter itself just doesn't do the job. This poor guy had a 383 and a Magnuson installed elseware. It started burning oil a few months later.
I took it apart to see if a simple re-ring would fix him up. I doubt it. The cylinders are scored as well as the pistons. I can just imagine what the inside of the magnuson looks like!
Just check inside the filter or throttle body often enough to stop a potential problem.

And yer point is? Just because a filter is used at the track doesn't mean it's best for the streets and everyday driving. There is a trade off when using a less restrictive air filter. You have to decide what best works for your driving needs. To many people think you can use drag or track parts for everyday driving conditions.

I am guessing it is the filter that comes packaged with the vararam system. A notoriously bad filter. Would swapping to the K&N filter or the like avoid this problem?

Well, I must be an idiot! Is it K&N, Blackwing, Fram Air Hog, or all oiled filters in general? Is this a stock replacement filter? Please don't leave us hanging!

I think changing to the K&N or equivalent filter would have to be ahuge improvement. The foam just doesn't stop dirt. You really have to be careful how it seals around the outside of the filter though. Maybe a piece of firm weatherstipping glued in place for the filter to seal on?
I just know that this much dirt will destroy and engine in a hurry and you should be aware of the potential. Most guys put on their cold air system and don't check the filter for months. I'm just saying check it often and if dirt is getting through do whatever it takes to fix it.

I don't drive my car much but, just popped the lid and the filter is clean and so is the TB. Maybe 1500 miles on it. Thanks for the heads up i'll check it often. Was that the new baha race filter or the old design?

I think you are wrong. I've used K&N's on other cars and never found this on them.

That's not just dirt that's in there. There is some wetness (oil or water) that is making it cake like that. Where did that come from? I'm gonna check mine that's for sure.

Wow! That is very scary, to say the least. I do know that there are a few major (non-foam) filter manufacturers that produce a huge majority of the filters used by K&N, Halltech, and Donaldson air intake systems. Jim Hall himself broke down a Z06 engine after 20,000+ miles of using a Halltech Warhead filter and the engine was like brand new. High-flow is nice but good filtering is essential.

Thanks for the heads up Andy.
Could you please make sure that a K&N get's into my car for it's trip home. I will hang onto the one that is in there now as a spare.
I will see you early next week.
Thanks, Perry
