Default Important 4+3 Tranny Filter Information - Step Inside>>

For those of us with the Doug Nash 4+3 transmission in our C4's, the source for replacement filters seemed to be pretty much limited to Mid America or Eckler's and the cost has been around $20 plus the freight charges. I bought one from Mid America last month and the whole thing came to damn near $30.00.

I had read somewhere that this filter (no longer stocked as a GM or AC Delco part) was the same filter as was used on the Ford "FMX" automatic tranny used on late 60's and early 70's 351W-equipped Cougars, Torinos and other mid-size sedans.

I found an FMX filter today at my shop that was sold by Carquest so I compared it to the one I bought from Mid America. Here's the pics:

Here's the filters side by side:

Both filters are the same dimensions, made from the same material, have the same molded depressions and curves, ad the stainless pan is the same. MAD doesn't supply the o-ring nor does Carquest so if that needs replacing, it will have to be purchased separately.

The MAD filter does come with a cork gasket, but black RTV sealant is really the preferred material to seal the pan to the rail. The Carquest filter comes with a gasket but it's for the FMX tranny which is a larger square-shaped pan.

The Carquest filter is about $8.00 list Fram also has a filter for the FMX and it should run about the same price at AutoZone or Shucks or Kragens.

Hope this helps when you go to service your 4+3 OD unit!!

Thank you thank you thank you!

And thank you to whoever originally posted this.

I hate having to order from the catalogs for general maintenance stuff.

As far as the grommet, I don't recommend reusing it, unless maybe it's an OEM grommet.

The last aftermarket one I put in was cut by the sharp edges of the filter, which let the pump suck air.

With that part number I did a little cross-referencing...

Carquest # 85926
AC-Delco #: TF184 ($4.50 at Rockauto.com)
Fram #: FT1024 ($9 at Kragen)
Napa #: ATP14717 ($8.50)
Ford #: D0AZ-7A098-A
General Motors #: 12339143

It was used on 50 vehicle models according the website (none of which includes the Corvette). (This is what the parts stores use to locate parts in the computer, so consider any of these as the secret password.

Did you hear that? I think it was the sound of Eckler's ripping us for their last $25 on a $5 filter.

I submitted a tech tip last nite and I included the list of brands and part numbers with a thank you to Central Coaster for his research efforts. I named the Tech Tip beginning with '4+3' so hopefully it will always appear at the top part of the C4 tech tip lists.

Don't know how long it takes for tips to be approved and entered, but hopefully having this information available will help people save some money. I wonder how long it will take for the catalogs to drop thir prices

I sent in a tech tip awhile back and it never went anywhere. I guess the next step here is to locate a grommet, it may be a generic part. As for the gasket, I don't believe the Corvette came with one. I think thats something the catalogs made up to justify the price of the 'filter kit'.

My 87 service manual says to use RTV when replacing the pan after service so it's possible that the factory never used a gasket. RTV is pretty much what is used in contemporary engines for oil pans and valve covers as a sealant.

Did you follow up your tech tip by contacting a Mod? Guess if mine doesn't show up by the first of the week, I might PM a Mod or Admin to see what sort of review policy or time frame there is. I looked at the list of C4 Tech Tips and the latest date on any of them was August of '04

I mentioned the same thing years ago. And again couple of months ago. This should be a permanent sticky.

I'm just surprised that a 4+3 would use the same filter as an auto ford... and that NOONE lists it!! why?!

Why not? The 2-speed transmission itself supposedly is out of a Chrysler product... and the Super T-10 isn't GM-created, either.

This is great info - I got soaked last fall for the filter, but like the rest of us it'll be for the last time. I owe somebody a beer if they're ever on the Right Coast...

Or sticky at least long enough for most everyone to see it.

I remember someone posting they found a replacement, but the thread unfortunately didn't get much exposure. I've never come across one with part numbers either.

I'm willing to bet the lack of information on the overdrive units, (wtf is ATF called for on a manual car?, how much fluid do I put in?, where do I buy the filter?, I don't understand this unit, don't wanna mess with it, etc...) I bet all of that has has factored into the bad rap these things get, just because of lack of maintenance.
