Default Z06 Drag Racers Help Me Here.

With the season coming up, I am expecting to go up against this certain '03 Z06 in our club running in the 12.00- 12.1 range.

Mods that I can see are long tube headers, intake, and a Hurst shift ****, so I am guessing a short throw shifter, (he claims its just a Hurst shift ****)

He swears that it has the stock 3.42 gears in it.

I recall hearing that a Z06 with it's MN12 transmission and 4.10 gears in it would require 4th gear before making it through the traps. Is this true? What about 3.90s?

Thanks Robz.

Is this a telltale sign that he is running other than 3.42s? I have never run a MN6 or MN12 Vette down the strip nor really paid attention to the ones at the track with regard to their "shift points" and number of shifts.

With my A4 and 3.42s I just make it into 3rd a little before the traps.

A Z06 (all have M12 tranny) with 3.42 will shift to 4th gear at around 100 and trap 110-118. So nothing you have posted would suggest he has installed a non-stock rear end.

So if he is running a stock rear end he will hit 4th gear and if he is running 4.10s he will too.

So are you saying that other than his ETs it is impossible to tell just by observing him run it down the track?

I always thought that if you ran lower gears (higher number) you had to shift sooner.

I look at this car and I can't put my finger on it ......but something just isn't right. Routinely, consistent, 12.1, 12.0X with just headers and a breather.

Those times are right in line for a ZO6 with the listed mods. Heck, Ranger was running ENTIRELY STOCK ZO6 in the 11's

Sounds like he is a good driver. Achieving consistent low 12s with the mods you are sure of is very good but quite a few drivers have done the same.

I've never seen a STOCK Z06 run in the 11's. I know at Beech Bend over the years I've seen a bunch of Z06 (stock) and all they run are mid to high 12's. Same thing at SC last year.

Most folks have never personally seen a bone-stock stock-tired Z06 run 11s. But many folks have seen me do it many times. And a bunch of other drivers have done it too.

Here is one thread with a certified timeslip, eyewitness accounts, and a picture:

I do not want to offend anyone but sorry, I just don't buy it. Someone needs to check the timing lights and the clocks at your track. There is just no way a stock ZO6 can run that deep into the 11's. Not even with good tires.

I politely and respectfully call

I'm not calling anyone a liar, I am just saying something is not right here.

We're saying bone stock on stock tires. There's really no way to call BS politely. Ranger has done it at several different tracks. Maybe the clocks are bad at all of them.

Your sig says you're a systems engineer. So you might appreciate the remoteness of the possibility that the timing equipment is improperly calibrated at the four tracks I've run

11.8s bone-stock on stock tires and
11.5s with just drag radials with a cold-air intake

For the record...the tracks are:

Maryland International Raceway, Budds Creek, Maryland
Cecil County Dragway, Rising Sun, Maryland
Capitol Raceway, Crofton, Maryland
Atco Racway, Atco, New Jersey

Well, for the record, are you going to the Birthday Bash, or the Cruise In? If so I'd like to see a "bone stock" ZO6 run in the 11's. I'll even buy you a beer to see that. Other wise, I only believe half of what I see, and not much of what I hear.

You guys might want to get out a little more often and see what folks are doing with these cars. Might also want to read GM HighTech Performance mag. Even they put a bone-stock Z06 on stock tires into the 11s.

If you want to follow the philosophy that nothing has ever occurred unless you've personally witnessed it, be my guest.

In the meantime, I'll continue to run fast times that you don't believe.
