427 ci Small Block driving impressions.
The only other guy that i have met that has one is BionicVette. His is the Bill Mitchel Hard core racing model with mid 500 hp and mid 500 TQ. He's also been driving it for over a year so he has lots more experience. His is 700R4 with 3.73 and mine in 700R4 with 4.11 rear gears.
I was waiting out the weather because I wanted to fire it up and drive it to get the first oil changes done. I watch the valve cycles on the number one cylinder and glanced down to see the pointer on the "Zero" mark and after aligning the oil pump shaft I stabbed the distributer in with the rotor aligned to piston number. The Dist. didn't fall all the way down so I just used a 1/2 drive breaker bar to rock the crank back and forth untill it fell in the final 3/8th inch or so.
My 427 fired up first thing. It’s just so nice to put a motor together and it starts the first time and even idled. No screwing around. Just a couple of pumps on the carb and hit the starter switch. Instant life when the gear reduction mini starter hit.
I hooked up a timing light and it was about 8 or so degrees high with all the timing in @3200 rpm. 40 degrees instead of 32 required for max power on new aluminum heads. So I backed it down and hooked up the Vac advance. Then turned the idle speed to about 950 rpm and I took a 36 mile round trip and changed the oil. I’m doing the 3000 or less rpm for 500-600 miles to break in the bearings and rings. Then I will go for it. All 7000 rpm - right into the rev limiter
My old 383 was high strung compared to this motor. 427ci just purr’s along going down the freeway at 85 mph @3000 rpm. I have not even put my foot into it, but I can tell that it wants to run. I have the tranny set to instant shifts, but not banging the gears.
The oil pressure hot was 50 psi at 3000 rpm with 10W-40 oil. So I still need to figure out. If I need to go lighter weight in the future to bring the pressure down.
My car is a little on the loud side and sitting at a couple of stop lights, people would glance over because the car kind of shakes at idle in gear at 850-900 rpm.
I'm taking a day off work this week and just driving out to my friends house 320 some miles away. Just drive out and visit, have lunch and drive home. It's a long drive on these straight freeways only going 85 mph the whole way!

Man I'd love to have that motor. Post your #'s once you run the quarter. With those meats you should be hooking it up pretty well. Should be pretty darn quick!

The changes between 383 and 427 is: Both have extreeme roller cams. With the 427 I used an additional 6 degrees on the intake & exhaust and changed from 112 lobe centers to a now closer 110. Compression dropped @.5 to 10.7. The big thing I noticed is how quiet the new valve train is. Lash is now at .012 instead of typical .018-020 like most modern solid roller cams. I'm using a H-roller cam with Crane pro solid rollers. So the lash takeup ramps must be ground differently on these XR294HR cams.
The carb had been run on my 383 as well as the single plane intake so I never touched it. I was going to look at the new plugs and see how the jetting is. Maybe even a vacuum gauge and set the idle A/F ratio to get a really smooth idle. all that kind of changes at breakin, when things magically just free up. It's already set at 16 initial and 32 max advance.

Your gonna love that motor, hurry up and break it in, it probably seems like a mild motor with lots of torque right now but the first time you stand on it your gonna crap, just make sure you got lotsa room on the road

I love my smallblock 434. The power band is from 2400rpm to about 6000 rpm. Never drops below 400 ft/lbs all the way.
And thats with a relativley wussy .500 hyd flat tappet cam...
George, you'd better start saving for new tires, they won't last long!

As the population continues to grow and more cars on the road fast machines become more of problem. I'm aways worried about the idiots. The roof of my car is lower than the back bumper and wing of a 2005 Mustang. It's the honest truth that some of these people have not seen me when they change lanes.
Vette addict what are you trying to iron out?
