This spring before I get to th track and stuff I wanted to change all the fluids in the car (yes including the blinker fluid for you smart-a$$es). I've done plenty of oil changes before, but what is involved with our rear end/transmission?

Any help appreciated.

OK, it works, so I will retype my reply.

For the small amount of money, it is mucho easier, cleaner, and faster to have someone with a lift do it. I had the tranny done on Wed. and I imagine the diff is more of the same.

I change out my tranny and diff fluids routinely. It is really pretty easy.

To start, I bought a set of Rhino Ramps from Walmart and put the car up on those using jack stands as backup.

The tranny (assuming manual) drain plug is on the lower rear corner, passenger side. The fill plug is about 2/3 the way up on the driver’s side. Tranny takes a DEXRON III fluid. You’ll need about 3.5-3.75 quarts.

The diff drain plug is on the center bottom. The fill plug is on the rear face upper right. The diff uses 75w90 synthetic lubricant. The diff may also need a bottle of friction modifier if chatter occurs. I don’t use it and don’t have chatter. It will take about 1.75 quarts.

You’ll need a hand pump to get the fluid up into the tranny and diff.

I use AMSOIL ATF in the tranny and AMSOIL recently came out with a new Severe Gear Extreme Pressure 75w90 Gear Lube that I will use this year.

with Subdriver..it is easy to do just takes a little time but besides knowing you added the right amount etc. it also gives you a chance to inspect the underneath part of your car clean out radiator etc.

Here is a very handy tool that you can use to get the new fluid back in the trans and tthe rear.





It's like a giant IV bag for your car. You fill it with the fluid of your choice and squeeze the bag.

Are you sure about the differential requiring synthetic oil? I didn't see any reference to that in the owners manual.

The differential does not require synthetic oil, but you must add the limited slip additive.

I changed all the fluids in the 98 last year. I suggest getting the specific year service manuals for your Vette. It will tell you info on procedure and torque values.

I got that off page 7-20 of the 2002 Z06 owners manual. Not sure what any of the others say.

My 98 book is different, maybe the Z06 diffs require the syntheric oil

Wonder if they changed the requirement along the way. Anyone with a 2002-2004 C5 looked at their owners manual to see what it says?

From the 2002 Owners manual page 7-20. Rear Axle (Limited-Slip Differential)...SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Axle Lubricant....With a complete drain and refill add 4 ounces (118ml) of Limited-Slip Axle Lubricant Additive.

I use Redline so it already has the friction modifier in it. But I highly recommend the Amsoil pump. You can attach it directly to a 1 gallon milk jug that you've cleaned and filled with the tranny fluid of your choice and pump it in with little or no mess. Super easy.
