Pete, I don't want a +25% volume pump... (as the 10551 is..)
In addition the Canton pickup you have (the one good for the 155 ) will be too long.
I'll prefere a stock volume pump. (the 10554 pump is stock volume with the 3/4 press in pickup).
If you want to use this pickup and a M select pump , i think that the 10554 will be better without modifications to the pickup.
Let me know.
-Beppe-
Beppe,
I made the call and stopped the order. You are correct. The 10554 should be the h/d old style casting and it should fit the pan and 3/4 pick up. It's all good.

I do not KNOW that the BBC pumps have created issues, but
CrashGordon provided a link to a thread that discusses the BBC pump
performance back when he started the original thread about Melling
pump problems

Here is his original initial thread that began back on 11/17/2006
Here is the link he provided in his first post above.
This thread and the following one emerged as a result of
CrashGordon's first thread.
I would like to say a belated THANKS to CrashGordon for bringing
this problem to my attention. I initially posted that the examples
at the time were extreme applications and I did not feel that routine
applications would be at risk. I have since changed my mind.

I GOT MINE! I finally have an engine with an oil pan on it. You may remember that I ordered the M155HV pump and Canton pickup from Canton. They assured me the M155 series was the heavy casting. As was noted earlier by Pete K and myself, this is NOT true. The M155 series is the same exact housing as the M55 with the exception of pickup tube size. This fact doesn't exactly put Canton on my faves list. Anyway, here is my combination. I have the 15-240M Canton pan with the M Select 10555 pump and the Canton pickup 20-079. The M Select series places the pickup 1/4" closer to the bottom of the pan. I spent all last night and early today trying to figure out how to use the Select pump. What I ended up doing is bolting down the pump and installing the pickup on the pump. I then used a light plastic mallet to bend the pickup tube and mounting bracket up a bit. I ended up with just under 1/2" clearance on one side of the pickup and just over 3/16" on the other. I could have cut the mounting bracket and re-welded it on in a higher position but I would still have had to bend the tube so I figured this would be much easier. Either way I was going to have a slightly cocked pickup which should not pose any problems given the slight amount it is cocked.
I sure hope the rest of you find a solution to your problems, when are we all going to Melling Co.? I would also like to thank CrashGordon for bringing the inferior Melling products to our attention.

Would it be more accurate to say that the 10555 places the pickup
1/4" closer to the bottom of the pan
than the M155HV?

The M-Select series consists of several different pumps. The 10555
is a high volume (longer than stock body), 3/4" bolt-on inlet with
drive and idler shafts that extend into the pump end cap (thicker
than stock cap).

On the other hand, I believe that the M-Select 10551 high volume,
3/4" press-in inlet and regular drive/idler shafts will be dimensionally
the same as the M155HV, but have the heavier casting.

Although it is a comparison between a stock vol, press-in design
and a high vol, bolt-on with shafts extended into the end cap,
85vet's photo below gives a good illustration of the physical differences.

Notice the end cap where it is thicker between the bolt heads
and the joint with the body - this is for the extended shafts.
The 10552 has 10% higher volume than stock and a 3/4" inlet with pressed or bolt on pickup.
The 10555 has 25% higher volume than stock and a 3/4" inlet with pressed or bolt on pickup.

Edit: to correct this remark "The 10552 is the 5/8" version of the 10555 (3/4")" (WRONG).
Per 85vet - "The 10552 is 10% higher volume and .75" inlet with pressed or bolt on pickup."
Thanks, 85vet.

The 10552 is 10% higher volume and .75" inlet with pressed or bolt on pickup.

I show pics on photobucket with measurements to reflect dimensional differences of pumps that I have.
10552 & 10553

Yes it definitely would. I guess I was too darn happy to be done with this mess to be specific. My apologies if I misled anybody who has been having pump/pickup/pan problems. (Try saying that 3 times real fast.)

Fortunately we are looking out for each other, 85vet caught
my 'oops' above regarding the 10552 pump features.

Here is the link to the Mellings on-line catalog again.
The M-Select pumps are on page 3

Well I got the correct pickup from Kevco.
I have new pics!!!!!
http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a26...%20oil%20pump/
The actual difference of standard vs HV to the center of the intake is
(.5865 inches)
See pics on photobucket - for how I measured.
10552 - 4.377 - (.5*.75) = 4.002"
10553 - 3.728 - (.5*.625)= 3.4155"
Difference: .5865"

I went to the local performance shop (a one man show) yesterday to look an see if he had any thick old style pumps in stock.

I just so happen to have a M55A that I bought about 6 years ago and never used, I took that with me to judge. The answer was a no, he didn't have a M55 or M55A in stock that was the thick style. He did in fact have a HV55 that was thick, but not what I need.
He wasn't happy when he read that note about not using the pumps for performance use.He hadn't heard about the cracking issues yet.

I gave him the 10553 part number to get me a price. He thought I had given him the wrong part number because his warehouse didn't even list it.

We looked into the 2006 Milodon catalog and it seems they have started making a standard volume, standard pressure SBC oil pump.
I should have wrote that part number down because I can't remember it now and I can't find it online.

In the Milodon catalog it mentioned that it is a thicker casting and is also made out of the same material as a brake rotor for extra strength to avoid cracking like other manufacturers. There was a picture of the mounting area and it looks like the thick old Melling and it had the word Milodon cast into it.I didn't see mention of what the gears were made out of.
So Milodon is aware of the "little problem".
He said it was 36 bucks but it would have to be special ordered from the factory and it may take one month to get here.

Milodon has a site at www.milodon.com. Their oil pumps can be viewed
on this page of the site.

Here is an exerpt from the current Milodon on-line pump page

- #18755: Small Block (283-327-350-400) - Standard volume and pressure
- #18750: Small Block (262-400) & V6 (200-229) - 3/8" deeper than stk pump w/ 5/8" inlet
- #18770: Small Block - Uses large 3/4" inlet for pickup and is the Big Block Chevy pump style

Regarding the Milodon #19750 that appears in HRM - I wonder whether this is
a typo? For us to see that number now in the Feb '07 issue, it must have gone
to print in late summer or early fall. I have checked the number at several
on-line vendors, they all come up 'Not Found'. The Milodon Search came up
empty, too.

Milodon DOES offer a #18750 pump, so ... ?

I got the # from the pic in the magazine. Maybe they just forgot the disclaimer, pic may not represent actual product.

I sure do wish we had known about the Milodon pump sooner. I would pay double what I paid for the Melling Select I have just to avoid using a Melling product.

I went to their site and I looked at that same page before you posted it.Funny thing is I just skimmed through it.I noticed the 3/8 deeper pump (that just doesn't sound right ) listed first and then skipped down to the BB style pump...Didn't even see the standard/standard

I wish the online site had the picture of the mounting area that I saw in the 2006 catalog.Like I said that area looked like the old thick M55 casting.

Midnight 85, do you still have the M155 HV (light casting) that you
received from Canton? If so, can you take photos of the pump and the
packaging.

If you need somewhere to host the images, you can use one of the
free services or I can host them for you.

Also, did your pump come directly from Canton or was it handled
by an intermediary?

I'll get pics tomorrow and get them up here. I ordered the pump and pickup from Canton at the same time.
