Fuel Pump Sock Orientation

Fuel Pump Sock Orientation
I had to remove the pulsator dampner due to it allowing pressure loss. Now that i'm back in there, i thought i would check to see what way the sock is supposed to be installed. The manual is no help here 
Does it point front to back or side to side or somewhere in between
The sock that came with the new pump was about 2 inches longer than the original so there didn't seem to be any good postion. I just bought the OEM sock so maybe i can get it right this time.

On my '95 it goes side to side which is contrary to the little channel in there. But that's the way it's supposed to be from what I understand. Unlike some, I've never had any fuel starvation problems on hard cornering (either before or after changing the pump) at any fuel level so it must be right.

The sock is wider than the channel and the pump is on an angle, so if it went front to back, the one end would be high and dry under low fuel situations. There just doesn't seem to be a good position

the one I replaced was oriented so the return fuel hit the sock.
lets call that the 9 o'clock
That return fuel gets damn warm to say the least
I installed the new sock at the 12 o'clock position and have no problems.
to answer your ? about stock position - dont have one - this was at least the second pump in the tank with the 9 o'clock position
the sock removed was the same size as the sock I installed on the new pump

I put mine front to back. I had exactly the same concerns when putting mine back togather. Mine seemed to fit better in the channel front to back vs side to side. I have not had any issues even when the tank is low.

I went through the same on mine. Believe it or not the only real picture was in a hayes manual. The fuel pump directions and the helms were all contradicting.
What I had seen (from the crush marks on mine) was the sock was (towards front) was at 1 o'clock (across the channel). So what I found (on mine at least), if you put it in any way but up and down, the sock itself gets crushed on the yellow boat (channel). So to me the option was it gets crushed on the edge of the channel, or inside the channel and maybe starved on low fuel. I opted for keep a half tank in it and place it inside the channel . Since the actual pickup is centered, I felt it would be fine, and it has been ever since I did mine.

I had the same question on mine. I'm sure the stock sock on my 96 was side-to-side. It was crushed on the return line and bent against the yellow channel.
It seemed crazy for it to be installed like that so I put it lenghways in the channel or the 12:00 O'clock positoin with the long end towards the bottom of the channel.
I do have fuel starvation problems when my tank is below half full on hard corners.
Maybe I will go change it and see what happens....

I changed mine this morning back to the correct side-to-side orientation. I think it made a little difference on a low tank of fuel but I'm not sure. I put 10 gallons in and drove it again and did not notice a difference. So, it might matter when you only have 3 or 4 gallons in the tank.

When I changed the sock on mine it did not have a side to side style sock on it, and the new one was the same style. It has a long end that points to the back of car and fits in the yellow plastic tray. I do not have any fuel problems down to running on fumes.

I assume those are designed with the intent to install front to rear? Seems like a better idea.

If I remember right, the one I got from NAPA had the shape of the Airtex sock, it cost five bucks.

I'll ask the man (Gordon Killebrew) when I see him at Bloomington Gold next week and post the results. And by the way, for those of you from the South: When you go to the beach in your Speedo suit, the potato does not go in the back!
