Default 78 L-82 4sp ?

I'm looking at a 78 L-82 4sp. members JK78SA and hunt4cleanair said in earlier posts that L-82s came with close ratio m-21s and wide ratio m-20s was wondering if there is a way of identifying which borg warner it would be from markings on the case? .. thanks Ray

I'd like to know that answer also, because I have a 79 L-82 4 spd, but I'd be willing to bet more often than not, if the original owner opted for the L-82, then likely they also opted for the close ratio trans. I asked this same question a few weeks ago and never got a good answer.

"....A total of 12,739 had the optional L82 engines, 3,385 Corvettes had the M21 four-speed close-ratio gearbox...."

Someone with a Black Book can probably break it down further, build sheet would tell you for sure with RPO codes.

You can request a copy of your original dealers invoice from Allied Vaughn,a first tier supplier for GM....they maintain copies of dealer invoices..cost is $50.....these invoices are available for 77 Corvettes and newer......you need to give them your Vin #....

Rich, how do you get in touch with Allied Vaughn? I'd be interested in a copy for my 79.

My invoice reads on my 78 L82:

8ym21 four speed close-ratio trans.

The only numbers I could see on the trans is 1304-065-903.

Did not see any letters followed by numbers.

I had to clean mine good...they are stamped in and have date code..your number is for the aluminum casting...

Gear differences noted below:
Corvette 350 L82/M20 (78) 2.64 1.75 1.34 1.00 2.55 (W)3 Alu. 903 Alu.
ZT Corvette 350 L82/M21 (78) 2.43 1.61 1.23 1.00 2.35 (S) 2 Alu. 903 Alu.

Note that (W) and (S) are ratio codes....

OK, this is from the 78/79 NCRS judging manual. "The most obvious distinction between the two, from an external view, is the shape and configuration of the side cover. The M20(wide)side cover is straight along the bottom and has three shafts extending through it for shift levers. The M21(close)has a curved bottom on the side cover and only has two levers extending through it. The third shaft and lever assembly is located in the case extension."
Hope this helps.

RH...your dealer invoice shows an MM4 four-speed equippd with an L82 in a late 78 built Corvette...quite late in production. Yet here you indicate an M20. You may have added a note below describing the codes and look of it...interesting observation though.

You are looking for a set of numbers on the driver's side where the tail housing bolts to the main housing that are stamped versus embossed. Look for a format W H 12 7 2 where

W = supplier
H = Month where A = January
12 = Day of the month
7 = model year
2 = Ratio code

This reads the supplier as Warner assembled Jun 12 77 is a M21 close ratio. The M20 would carry a 1 while a Muncie (MM4) would use an "A" for the ratio code and a slight different code format. If I find a photo...I'll post.

So it looks like L-82s could have came with 3 different 4 speeds ?

edit: we need to see a build sheet with a M-20

This is great info here guys, keep it coming. I might have to go out in the freezing cold and get down on the freezing cold garage floor today to verify if mine has the close ratio trans or not. Thanks for all the great advice.

even getting more interesting Rich, according to your link the 3,385 number is total of M-21 and M-20s combined, makes sense .. Ray

edit: so if you have either it makes your car even more rare
