Default Info on how to change a battery

I looked in my owners manual on how to change the battery in my '01 coupe and it refers me to getting a service manual. Can anyone tell me where I can get this manual or is there somewhere that describes the procedure on how to take the old battery out and put a new one in? Is there anything special I need to know?

Disconnect negative battery cable.
Disconnect positive battery cable.

Loosen clamp, lift out old battery.
Drop in new battery, making sure it's wedged under the rear tray lip. Tighten clamp.
Connect and tighten positive cable.
Connect and tighten negative cable.

Start it up and drive it like you stole it.

Do you have tools? You will need about a 10" extenion, socket wrench, socket and a couple of wrenches. Once you disconnect the battery there is a nut directly in front and at the bottom of the tray. Pull that out and the battery will lift right out.

It's no different than any other car. Surely you've changed batteries on other cars, haven't you????

Should he use some device to supply electricity to the car to preserve electrical/computer settings while he is changing the battery?

Thanks for the responses. I know, the question seems basic to most of you. No, I have never changed a car battery before but I have changed the oil on cars before. I guess the reason why I asked is that I wanted to be sure to do it right. I'm a little paranoid when it comes to doing stuff on the Vette. I want to do it right.

Cajundude, thanks for your answer, that helps. I did see that nut that you were talking about and I was wondering if you had to loosen that to take the battery out. I do have a 122 piece Craftsman wrench set so I should be able to do that. Is that the only nut you have to take out (besided disconnecting the terminals) to take the battery out?

Nope. Just the terminals and the one nut.

Probably the most important thing to remember here is when disconnecting it's neg. first, pos.last.........connecting is pos. first, neg. last. Basic albeit important stuff....... There is no such thing as a dumb question in my view!!

mrm1149, thanks for that info, I didn't know that. When it comes to electricity, you don't want to mess that up!

These are getting better. Makes no difference which to hook first.
Don't get these people anymore confused. They are electrically the same.

You disconnect the negative (ground) first because if you accidentally short the wrench to ground nothing happens. Then you disconnect the positive and because the negative is NOT connected, should you short the wrench to ground nothing happens.

You reconnect the positive first for the same reason, if you short the wrench to ground nothing happens. Then you reconnect the negative (ground) side.

alot of us forget where we started out. this is my 1st performance car and the 1st car I've done all of my own work on, I'm still not willing to post some of the dumb things I've done that most would people would think are basics that "everyone" knows, but you've got to start somewhere.

I beg to differ, by disconnecting negative first, and reconnecting it last you minimize the possibility and size of a spark. if you reconnect positive last, the spark will be much larger, and since batteries generate hydrogen gas as part of their chemical reaction, it is wise to minimize sparking.

the reason there is less of a spark on the negative side is because automotive batteries has 1 less negative plate in their internal construction
