I'm a 79 owner. Fig A would be to make sure you got the correct water pump. Our's are different that the standard short or long Chevy pumps. That might be throwing off the alignment of your belts.

The EPS intake will give you slightly more clearance and is a good performance intake. I'm using it on my 79, Holley 670 SA, 3/4" spacer, 3"x14" air filter but did have to go with a drop base.
