I´m not trying to lecture on this gelcoat theme I only exposed my experience, I belive you, you can make a fiberglas piece with out gelcoat, as you stated gelcoat create´s a waterfroof final finish...

Sorry I did not use prepsol to clean the surface before spray gelcoat I USED ACETONE

When you make a new fiberglas piece the first thing you apply to the perfect mold is gelcoat, then fiberglas and ressin, here the scenario is backward, the perfect pieces were put together years back...

If you replaced the oil with new sinthetic compressor oil, might as well flush the evaporator, condenser and lines and convert to r134a, why this, the only difference between and old ac and a new one...

Do not spray anything on fiberglass without gelcoat, make sure you Gelcoat it, otherwise the fibers will migrate to the fiberglass surface over time and it will ruin the finish, mi 2 cents
