I’ve found that hooking them up to a battery on the workbench and running them helps to keep the commutator shined up. Run them both directions for a good while. 5 minutes or so.

Soak the pivot balls with your favorite spray lube.

I’ve found it’s best to run them on the bench forward & reverse about five minutes each to free up the motor...

They make batteries for host of nameplates.
