well i think i have it all back together. i guess the clue was the absence of parts in the basement. my only issue was the top was off so long it had shrunk. i adjusted it down and got it to hook....

i talked to a guy today who wraps his emblem pins...

i talked to a guy today who wraps his emblem pins with tape to make them tight. he removes his for waxing and he says they stay on with no problem.
