I change my oil when it is warm. In the grand scheme of things it makes little difference hot or cold. I choose warm so I don't burn myself, it flows out quicker and I leave less residue oil behind....

Are you sure the sockets were damaged by the LED bulbs? Typical led wattage for back lit gauges are ~1.5 watts VS the wattage of an incandescent back lit gauge bulb of 3.8 watts....
