The number of shims on each side of arm is determined by the wheel alinment . There is no set number.

There are no markings or numbers on the shifter, but I believe it to be GM. It was removed from my 75, but was not original to this car. I bought this some time ago on ebay. All of it was on a M20...

That is the steering lock/ignition inter lock. There is usually a cable that attaches to it from the trans. With an auto it would be in park, manual reverse. Keeps from starting in gear.

Stay with the r12. 134 just does not work well with these old systems. You can get plenty of r12 on ebay for about $30-35 per can and to be strictly legal, you can get a license online for $20.

I don't know the difference between 79 and 78 except I have read the 79 has some one only parts. If you can find a 78 and follow Jim Shea's instructions, it is an easy swap and a huge improvement.

If you can find one from a 78, it is about 3" shorter and will bolt up with minor alteration . Jim Shea has a very good paper on this swap. This is what I did in my 75 and the stock dished steering...
