You just have to get used to not freaking out about severely tilting the battery, and it comes right out without disconnecting the heater hoses, and it doesn't spill anything.

I agree with GaryC and JerryBramlett. the gage is the root cause of the incident. Note that a healthy gage couldn't possibly carry enough current throught itself to cause those hefty copper wires...
