A friend of mine is working on converting his TPI to use LS1 electronics. He is running it now with the '730 ecm and the multi coil ignition. With the 8 coils, the idle quality is unbelievable! He...

Re: Want to upgrade to 140 amp Alternator for the 85 (Southern Comfort)

I dropped a large (cs144????) alternator from a '90 Caddy Deville on my '86. I had to do a little filing on the top bolt boss, but nothing major. Also, the pulley from the Vette alternator has to be...

My neighbor's '78 Vette has developed a leak in the radiator and he was going to have it replaced at a local shop. They told him that it was a major pain because the left contol arm had to come off...

Re: gross polluter in california (unaware)

More than likely, if you replaced the ecm and everything is working, then you should not have too much to worry about. I don't have my service manual in front of me, but there are several relays and...

Re: gross polluter in california (unaware)

When my '86 showed the O2 sensor code and replacing the sensor did not fix it, I traced the wiring down and could not find anything wrong so I swapped in another ecm and the problem was solved.

Re: Does anyone use Lucas Oil Products? (JrRifleCoach)

I've got the power steering stuff in the v8 minivan and it has pretty much stopped leaking. I also used their stuff for ticking lifters in the van- the engine had been sitting for several years and...

Re: What is the life expectancy of a stock torque converter? (JrRifleCoach)

The converter in my van went bad recently. I thought the tranny was slipping, but when the converter locked, all the slipping was gone. The guy at the tranny shop said that it was not very common but...

Re: Why won't my '86 dash lights do anything? (hngacurv)

I appreciate the responses so far, but I was not specific enough- sorry about that.
The dash lights work, but they are always at the same brightness level. At night, open daylight, with the dimmer...

Why won't my '86 dash lights do anything?

Well, not exactly my '86 anymore, but my former car's dash will not respond to higher/lower settings on the headlight switch or change intensity in bright light. The new owner has replaced the...

Questions about which scanning software to use

I have had pretty good luck with WinAldl tuning my '170 and '747 ecms and was wondering if there is a similiar program for the '730/727 ecms. I was wondering about stuff like the BLM correction...

Re: They say it can't be done but going to do it. Electric Forced-Induction. (BIG JIM 54)

Good Luck Jim! I used to race 1/12 scale, 4 cell modified oval cars and wound my own rotors. I loved using the 'slot machine' and 'green machine' rotors and had really good success with them back in...

Re: L98 MAF To LT1 MAF (88_vette)

The GN is already a frequency based MAF so converting it to an lt1 style would be more do-able than switching a voltage based signal system to read a frequency based MAF. It can be done, but it would...

Re: 1985 alternator upgrade Question (SBNova)

I used a larger style alternator (cs140, I think) on my 86. It is rated at 120 amps and was almost a direct bolt on replacement. I just swapped the pulley from the old alternator and had to file a...

Re: What's the best gear for auto trans? (bmtdavis)

For hard use, drop it back to drive. With the selector in O/D, even if it does not shift to overdrive, you are still spinning an extra sprag and drum (this is what lets the tranny 'freewheel' when...
