Are you sure it isn't referring to using 1st gear up to 40 mph before you shift out to second gear. I never shift into first until I am stopped or very near stopped.

1 is there is a loose ground or there was a loose ground when the reprogramming was going on. Check around they're work to see if you can find loose wires....
