sounds like you need more tire... no idea on second gear starts, I would say it seems counter-intuitive to learn to start in 2nd gear instead of making the power you have work with the proper tires.

start in 1st gear, then 2nd, then 3rd...... now compare. 6th gear is for gas mileage and I am sure the vette in 6th will turn less rpms at 70 than the bimmer, thus your thought on the torque curve...
