The distributer is new, an aftermarket tach drive unit I purchased from one of the vendors on the forum. But changing the face plate sounds like an easy remedy.

Tach issue 1963

Recently purchased and installed a tach for my 63. However, at idle it reads 4000 rpm then will peg out. Any ideas?

Found the problem. Removed the cover and noticed...

Found the problem. Removed the cover and noticed the contacts were misaligned, fixed that and the motor wors fine.

Where does the reinforcement go, in between the door front and the base or? If it's between the door cover and the base it's a very tight fit.
