Have you tried testing your Ignition Control Module? My '89 had similar problems to your '86 one time. I spent around $300 to find out that a $20 part had gone bad.

Well there is already a kit to convert the rear of the C7 to look like the rear of a C6. I guess it depends on how many people hates those pesky round tail lights before a C6 to C7 conversion kit...
