The same thing was happening to my 85. The only thing that helped me was putting an extra universal carb spring on. It was only supposed to be a temp fix but 2 yrs later it's still there.

Buy a non-contact thermometer and then take the temp of the thermostat housing. That will give a pretty accurate reading of the temp your running at. Plus, they come in handy for other things too.
