I did try the 84 and it sorta worked but the wiring is different. They ground differently but you can use one. Its best to just update to a newer ECM. I never tried the 84 ESC.

Thanks Alan, I looked at the AIM for my 82 and the wires are indeed grounds. My horns are mounted in the fenders, however. Makes it fun and exciting to remove and replace!

Just to update: 2 and a half years later, still working fine and not getting hot. I was daily driving it just before summer with no issues. Big2Bird's info on the location is of course correct.
