Both tips are open, however one tip is straight through and the other goes through the muffler/resonance chamber. So the result is that the straight thru side gets most of the flow and becomes dirty...

I don't either. I had my '85 for over 25 years and when I had a carfax done it showed the car was sold several times while I owned it (without any real sales).

I still look at some of the carfax...

Look at some sites like TireRack.com. For each tire there is a tab for specs. On that page it lists the recommended rim widths.

For 245/50/16 tires it lists 7" to 8.5"...

For example my '94 6m was originally 27mpg highway, but the Corvette Museum one said 25mpg.
