It will deteriorate a foam brush in my experience. Also, if you use a hair style brush, buy the best. Anything less and you will be frustrated picking individual little hairs that come out the brush...

I have always just done the thing where you try to rotate the belt by hand and I make sure it won't twist more than 1/4 of a turn, or 90 degrees.

I put one on my 56 but only while I was tuning then removed it so it didn't affect under hood appearance. You certainly don't need it there all the time.
