The purpose of the brake light switch is just so you are not fighting engine torque while trying to stop the car in a panic situation. Yes the contacts are in and out, open or closed.

Will the engine stamp indicate vehicle options?

This is the engine stamp for a 65 convertible, it matches the vin tag. Car has 4 speed and no AC. Does this tag indicate either of these?

Could be an issue with the plug at the back of the center gauge bezel as it plugs into the printed circuit. Sounds as if you are charging but volt meter not registering it.
