Starter is a goner, one of the connectors is broken off and the wire just dangling.

Is it required to lift the engine as described in the service manual? I can lift the car but have no capability...

More likely the antennas are telling the computer that your fob is inside the car, so it won't unlock the doors. This also explains why the car starts up after you manage to get the door unlocked...
