Cruise control, steady speed kicks off SES light, no code?

The previous owner told me the car does this, and it drives me nuts. If i set the cruise, or maintain a steady speed, of about 55/60 mph, after about 5-10 miles it throws the service engine soon...

I dont understand how the vette (c4) qualifies? Didnt they all get 20 plus mpg from the factory? Any car 19 mpg or higher is exempt.
