Right on leesvet. Thermostat opens done, it no longer has any bearing on running temp. My 89 with 180 deg runs at temps you describe no problems.

They work very well. I have had mine a long time but I believe they came with specific instructions on where to drill. No down side IMHO.

I agree it depends on many things. On my 89 stock L98 on a 90 degree day I run 190 at idle at 190-220 this is coolent temp and I agree the manual says turn off at 260. Hope this helps.

Got mine from advanced auto when my core went. Good temp fix but it"s been three years and I can't work up the time to do a replacement so it's still holding.
