Besides the plastic inner fender, it's also good for shining up any exposed frame/suspension pieces (hence the "undercarriage" part of the name).
And the grape soda smell is a nice bonus!

Treat them like your paint. You're on the right track with the wax. I like to give my wheels a coat of Adam's Quick Sealant for another layer of protection, and it makes them easier to clean.
