Yeah the rear fasteners are just studs for the hardtop. The bow pins for the soft top are 3/8" studs on one side and the pin on the other. Figured I could just grab a set of bow pins and screw them...

Just went through the same thing with my 75 conv. AC comp. crapped out on me and I took the belt off. Ended up with a consistent squeal around 3k rpms shifting.

Clunking under hard acceleration/shifting is probably u-joints or the snubber bushing. Just replaced the snubber on my '75 last fall with your exact symptoms of clunking.

Yeah the wheel diameter is a little thicker on my 76 but it's not that thick. The pic makes it look worse than it is. The wheel on my 75 is definitely thinner and the leather wrap helped with that...
