I have a small cammed 406 and a Holley intake,36 total timing and converted the rears over to jets with Holleys kit 79 in the rear.
Runs great...

I drive mine to and from work occasionally and get appx 14 mpg.

When you DO change trannys,get a core from a 90 model v8 whatever,pref.Vette or 2wd truck-NOT S-10!!!!
The older 700s had 27 spline input shafts and weaker internals.
