hard 1-2 shift

I have a 16 auto that seems to have a hard 1st to 2nd shift. Could this be a problem in the making? What else do I need to look for and will this type of problem throw any codes?

Unfortunately, the car is torn down sitting on a lift. Wasn't drivable as fuel fumes had begun to be overpowering inside the car. I guess I need to start blowing up the phone lines.
