I might add that m symptoms were a little different than yours sound. the shift lever went into reverse position fine, just no engagement in the transmission.

I lost reverse once. Read on here that it was likely a nylon pad on the internal shift fork. No shop in my small town that could go in to the transmission, so had to get a rebuild
